Compact housing can broaden choices when it is well designed and located near transport, services and jobs. Industrialised construction may reduce some work on site, but it cannot create serviced land or replace housing policy.
What it could offer
Potential uses include temporary accommodation, extensions, smaller homes for some households and supporting facilities. Each project still needs adequate living conditions, ventilation, insulation, safety and access to services.
The difficult questions
Where is it allowed? Who pays for the plot and connections? How can the total cost remain affordable? What happens after years of use? The answers depend on the place and the project. Arguing for clearer rules does not mean claiming that a capsule home can already be installed on any site.
