Solar panels on a capsule home: can you live without a grid connection?

Solar panels on a roof make an independent capsule home easy to imagine. Yet generating electricity during daylight and having power whenever you need it are different goals. Before comparing homes, define how you will use yours.

Three different projects

A grid-connected home can use part of its own generation. A battery-equipped system can store energy within its design limits. An off-grid home needs an arrangement that meets the planned uses without relying on an available connection. Spain’s IDAE publishes self-consumption guidance; its citizen guide is listed as updated in May 2026. It is a useful starting point for understanding options and procedures before commissioning a design.

Describe a normal day and a difficult one

List lighting, refrigeration, cooking, hot water, heating or cooling, and work equipment. Note operating hours and which loads may run together. Weekend use is different from a family living and working there throughout the year.

Ask the installer: “Which services can I run together, and for how long under the least favourable scenario?” Request the expected generation, usable storage, power limits and backup approach in the quotation. A summer output figure is not a year-round promise.

Coordinate the system with the home

The manufacturer and installer should agree on attachments, roof loads, cable penetrations and maintenance access. Include electrical protection, commissioning and documentation in the scope. “Solar-ready” needs a precise definition: a cable route is not a complete installation.

Water, wastewater, communications and lawful land use remain separate decisions. A compact home can support a restrained consumption plan, but its size does not replace a site-specific calculation. Prepare your consumption list before choosing equipment and use it alongside our complete-budget guide. Compare whole systems rather than panel counts.
