Shipping a capsule home from China: flat racks and closed containers differ

Capsule home beside an empty flat rack: conceptual scene

“Shipped in a 40-foot container” can describe very different transport arrangements. A rigid capsule home may travel on special platform equipment; a narrower or dismantled unit may involve different logistics. Identify the proposed equipment before using a conventional container rate to estimate the purchase.

The door can be the limit even when the interior seems large enough

As a fleet example, Hapag-Lloyd lists a closed 40 High Cube door opening 2,340 mm wide and 2,597 mm high. It cautions that specifications vary between equipment. This is a reference for your enquiry, not a capacity guarantee for your shipment.

Volferda advertises exterior E3 dimensions of 5.6 × 3.2 × 3.2 metres and flat-rack shipping. That is the supplier’s statement. Comparing its advertised external width with the example doorway explains why “40-foot” alone does not describe how a capsule travels. It does not establish whether another version has removable parts or how your order will be packed.

A flat rack is a different equipment family

Hapag-Lloyd lists its 40 Flatrack High Cube / Platform separately. An open platform does not provide the same closed enclosure as a conventional container. Request a drawing of the shipment-ready assembly, including protections and protrusions, rather than inferring the arrangement from a completed-home photograph.

Maersk distinguishes in-gauge and out-of-gauge cargo on special equipment. It also explains that packing and securing materials can alter declared dimensions. Shipment acceptance needs to address that real configuration. The home’s marketing name does not determine its logistics classification.

The information package to request before obtaining a shipping quote

InformationWhy request it?
Packed dimensionsAvoid quoting only the home without its protection
Mass and travel configurationIdentify the load the operator will assess
Proposed equipmentSpecify closed, flat rack or another accepted solution
Removed componentsEstablish what needs retrieving and assembly later
Handling instructionsAllow professionals to plan lifting, securing and support
Protection and inspectionAgree how condition is recorded before and after transit

This is a purchasing aid, not a lifting or securing plan. A buyer should not improvise attachment points or treat a rendering as a safety instruction. Ask the manufacturer and operator to resolve their interfaces and the relevant documents.

Compare more than ocean freight

Use the same route, configuration and scope when comparing quotations. Ask whether origin handling, terminals, destination arrangements, road transport and waiting or storage conditions are included. Request the inclusions and the pricing basis for items without a fixed amount. We do not publish a universal flat-rack rate: route, equipment, date and cargo conditions are needed.

Also propose a list of separately shipped items: steps, finishing pieces, furniture or other ordered accessories. A unit can arrive undamaged while still requiring work that a sales photograph does not show. The list should reflect the contracted configuration.

The port is not the end of access to the plot

A feasible ocean shipment does not confirm that the road vehicle and load can reach the site. Ask the haulier to assess the final route and agree the handover to unloading equipment. Separate three confirmations: ocean acceptance, road feasibility and preparation of the placement location.

Before reserving, aim for a quotation tied to the order’s drawing and shipping configuration. If width, packing or delivery point changes, request a logistics review too. That gives you a defined chain of operations to compare alongside the home you like.
