Buying a capsule home: has the supplier changed its bank account before payment?

You have chosen a capsule home and placed an order. A message arrives asking you to send the next transfer to a different account. There may be a legitimate explanation, but pause before acting. Can you verify the instruction without relying on the email that announced it?

Banco de España describes business email compromise: criminals impersonate a supplier and change the IBAN on an invoice. Its explanation, published on 5 July 2022, also advises contacting your bank promptly if you have already transferred money to a fraudulent account.

Check through a separate channel

Our suggested purchasing control starts with a telephone number verified before the change, perhaps during contracting. Do not rely entirely on the number, link or signature supplied in the new message. If an importer handles the purchase, establish which business should receive payment and why.

  1. Pause this payment instruction. Keep the original message and invoice unchanged.
  2. Use the earlier contact channel. Ask the responsible person to confirm the order, payment purpose and requested change.
  3. Reconcile the documents. Compare the contracting entity, invoice, stated beneficiary and explanation of any difference.
  4. Record the check. Note who verified the information, when and through which channel before approving payment.

Four questions for the supplier

Question What needs clarifying
Which milestone does this cover? Reservation, manufacture, transport or delivery of the identified order.
Who is the beneficiary? Its relationship to the business you contracted with.
Which document changes? The previous instruction being replaced and its date.
Who confirms the change? An identified person reached independently.

This table is an editorial purchasing aid, not an anti-fraud certification. A professional-looking invoice or a quick reply does not, by itself, resolve a mismatch between the parties.

When a business is buying the home

Where practical, separate the person entering a new beneficiary from the person authorising the transfer. Maintain a supplier record with verified contacts and an account-change history. For a multi-capsule project, tie each payment to the relevant units or deliveries rather than confusing a transport invoice with a manufacturing deposit.

If the discrepancy remains unresolved, keep that payment pending and ask your bank for assistance. If you suspect money has already gone to the wrong recipient, contact the bank promptly. This guide neither guarantees recovery nor determines the parties’ liability.
