The possibility of changing location is one of compact housing’s most appealing ideas. To assess that flexibility, distinguish a unit transported from the factory from one whose manufacturer has allowed for subsequent moves. We suggest asking about this before buying, even if relocation is not an immediate plan.
Check the instructions for the specific unit
Request disconnection procedures, lifting points and temporary support arrangements. Ask which elements need removal or protection, such as decks, outdoor equipment or large glazed surfaces. Alterations made after delivery can change what needs checking before lifting the module.
Study both sites
Preparing the destination alone is not enough. The team needs access to the departure site, space for lifting equipment and a way to remove the home without compromising neighbouring structures or services. At the destination, access, supports and connections need assessment again. Treat both ends as parts of the same quotation.
What the relocation quotation should cover
- Pre-move inspection and a photographic record.
- Disconnection and protection of services.
- Lifting, transport and applicable logistical permits.
- Preparation and assembly at the destination.
- Post-move checks and the party accepting the work.
This is our editorial checklist for obtaining comparable offers. We do not give a universal cost per kilometre: handling, access, the route and the condition of the unit may substantially change the scope.
Mobility does not transfer permission
MBI distinguishes permanent modular buildings from buildings designed for reuse at different sites. That distinction helps frame the right question for the supplier. Authorisation at the new location needs separate checking; do not assume that an installation approved in one municipality is approved elsewhere. Flexibility has value when it is documented and priced, rather than simply shown in a picture of a crane.
