When a major project needs workers in a remote location, accommodation becomes part of its infrastructure. The Wheatstone Village expansion in Talandji, Western Australia, provides a documented example of modular construction serving that need.
What was delivered
ATCO’s March 2016 project profile identifies Bechtel Australia as client and Chevron Australia as end client. It describes 500 four-person accommodation units adding capacity for 2,000 workers. The scope included design, manufacture, installation and service connections.
The programme includes dining, laundry and administration, plus recreation and medical facilities. It is more than individual bedrooms: daily operations need services and shared spaces.
Lessons for businesses
Our interpretation is that remote accommodation orders should specify capacity and operation alongside module count. The supplier, site contractor and operator need agreement on water, power, wastewater, maintenance and handover.
The case can inform a factory, long-running construction site or industrial operation. Wheatstone differs in scale and context from a private capsule home, but its approach to manufactured accommodation and coordinated placement is relevant.
Inputs for a new project
- Expected population and mobilisation phases.
- Services per resident and shared requirements.
- Ground, climate, transport and supply conditions.
- Maintenance and accommodation-management responsibilities.
The evidence supports delivery and capacity. It does not establish comparable investment returns or transferable Spanish costs. A commercial study needs local pricing and operations.
