A tiny house advertised for cold climates still leaves a different question unanswered: is its roof suitable for snow at your chosen site? Compare models using an answer tied to that location and to the configuration you will actually purchase.
Cold weather and roof loading are different questions
Spain’s CTE DB-SE-AE addresses snow as a building action in section 3.5 and considers site and roof factors. A competent professional must establish the assessment applicable to the project. An advertised minimum temperature does not replace that justification.
Our purchasing recommendation is to separate thermal comfort, structural documentation and installation conditions into three files. If a supplier answers a roof question with an insulation test, ask for clarification of what the document actually covers.
Information to take to the discussion
| Site information | Offered model |
|---|---|
| Location and altitude for the professional to verify. | Unit reference and structural version. |
| Surroundings and nearby buildings. | Roof geometry and available calculation documents. |
| Intended use and permanence of the installation. | Proposed supports, anchoring and installation configuration. |
| Planned roof-mounted equipment or additions. | Changes requiring a further assessment. |
This is an editorial preparation list, not a calculation method. Ask the responsible professional to identify missing information instead of filling the gaps with assumed values.
Comparing two manufacturers’ answers
For each model, request the document reference, date, responsible author and conditions of applicability. Record whether the answer concerns the catalogue product, a different variant or a site-specific review. Do not turn an isolated figure into a ranking of which home is safer.
As a purchasing example, adding solar panels or an attached canopy after accepting the offer calls for a discussion of what changes in the documentation. Agreeing the review before changing the design is clearer than assuming every accessory falls within an earlier assessment.
No universal snow-depth threshold
We do not provide a conversion from snow depth to permitted loading or instructions for accessing the roof. Request the unit’s operating and maintenance conditions and a contact for situations outside them. A trailer’s road approval, where it exists, answers a separate question and should not automatically be treated as a response about the installed home.
For the structure and supports, continue with our chassis guide. Before choosing where to live, bring the site and installation documentation together rather than committing to a model first.
